Take for example one of the most popular music applications Apple has ever created called Garageband. With this software, you can do tons of things like recording audio, editing songs, mixing rhythms, adding sound effects and almost everything you could ever imagine with regards to music.
I have not done anything with recording for years, I used N-Track for one project then got busy with life stuff; my son really got into Garageband at school so I am hoping to find something similar for Vista that he can get into without a big learning curve. I am looking for an app my son can use to create loops or tracks as a base then he can add bass and I can add guitar to end up with fun 'family-style' songs! I have a Line6 Toneport that I can use for guitar, bass, and vocals - now I just need a good program both of us can use. I looked at Reaper which looks really good but not sure if it is similar to Garageband. I'm a huge fan of Sonar Home Studio 6xl. Reasons being: 1. Vast array of virtual instruments included. Most impressive are Session Drummer 2 and Dimension LE.
Session Drummer 2 comes with a large drum sample library and midi based patterns. Dimension LE is a sample player/synth hybrid and also includes a large sample library including orchestral samples from Garritan Pocket Orchestra. 71 page manual done with larger font on pages about 6' x 8' with tutorials included. Enough virtual effects included to cover basic mixing chores and a few mastering chores. Particularly good in terms of sound quality are the Sonitus fx eq and the Boost 11 Peak limiter. I'm not sure if HS 6xl comes with an audio loop library though. Can't find this on the site.
I do have one but I think it was part of HS 4 xl from which I upgraded. Whether it's comparable to Garageband? IMO once you've used one you've used them all, or at least lowered the learning curve. Why I'm so stoked on HS 6 xl is because it has enough extras include that a solo hobbiest can have a very creative musical experience without being techically bogged down and without the pain of discovering additional component purchases are necessary. My only dissapointment with it is the lack of a good quality multi fx package for guitar. Do you mean similar or do you mean compatible?
Garageband is a pretty unique product for those that have used it and it is pretty significantly different from all of those listed. I have used each of the products mentioned and I've thought hard about what to suggest. What is your budget? If you don't have a budget for getting something you could both use.
You might want to consider swapping pre mixed mp3's back and forth. You can output your individual tracks as mp3's and he can drag them into Garageband add his part and export that as an mp3.
If you feel that you both have to be on the same application: Reaper is available on Mac OS now (it is a free downloadable late beta) you could use audacity it is available free on both platforms If you had a budget you could pick up a used mac and get garageband free on it or buy a mac mini for 449.00 and use it just for garageband. I think your son's first reaction when he uses the other applications I mentioned (or the ones mentioned by the other posters) he is going to say. 'these are cool, but you gotta see garageband'. They are all amazing and powerful applications but for some people garageband is a really powerful, simple application. Your son can get soundtrack and you can swap files back and forth. His garageband samples will work in soundtrack.
