I've downloaded the codec, but it's not showing up in any of my compression software (compressor, adobe media encoder, episode, mpeg streamclip, etc.) How does one make a video with this codec?

All's well so far. Crossfire is software that runs n many sports video boards. We had a lot of issue with that matrox stuff initially, but once we figured it out and made a preset in adobe media encoder, it's been fine. Fyi, it's under avi for adobe media encoder.
Also, you do NOT need matrox hardware here is a rundown of crossfire codecs: SD: Recommended AVI: Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame Supported AVI: Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame, DV25, DV50, DVCAM Supported MOV: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC (Suggested), H.264, ProRes 422 SD, Animation, Sorenson Video 3 HD: Recommended: Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame HD Supported AVI: Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame HD, DVCPRO HD Supported MOV:DVCPRO HD, XDCAM EX 35VBR, QuickTime ProRES 422.QuickTime ProRES 422 files will require transcoding to the Matrox MPEG-2 I-Frame HD codec on the CrossFire system prior to import. Also, please note this is not ProRES 422 HQ. HQ will not work! We've got a few Crossfire boxes. The Matrox codec content has to be made on a PC. No Mac options.
Unless you count Bootcamp/Parallels. You should deliver ProRes422i (or progressive they're one of the rare 720p shops) and tell them to use the Click Effects Transcoder on the desktop.
They'll have to close the Crossfire application (or at least clear the playout channels) as the transcoder uses the playout hardware to accelerate the conversion. Important when creating your ProRes 422i file you must get the interlacing correct. Crossfire only accepts ProRes files with proper interlacing data, and I bet 80% of people using ProRes never bother to get it correct. When selecting ProRes be sure to go to the advanced or options area and turn interlacing on. Upper field for 1080i, lower field for 480i. While you're there if you're coming from a 444 source turn on 4:4:4 chroma sampling filter while you're there.
Any After Effects/Motion projects will be 4:4:4. If you added text with drop shadows in Premiere use 4:4:4. If you aren't sure you can't go wrong using the 4:4:4 chroma sampling filter.
